DEFENSE. (LDP Concert) May 20, 2010. Music Museum

It’s been a more than a year since the legendary Francis Magalona passed way. Leaving thoughts of mainstream Philippines in high doubts on what lies ahead for the beloved genre he spoke of; and cultivated throughout his tenure as Pinas’ premiere hiphop pioneer. The weeks that followed this death, whether they admit to it or not – they have started to count hiphop out of the fight, questioning the legacy left of Magalona’s rich career. Our mourning has finally cleared some grey skies – this summer, hiphop’s call for arms has been sounded off, finally taking a stand for a legacy like no other.

This coming May 20 at the historic Music Museum, come and witness a consortium of hiphop performances that will surely assure you that hiphop in Pinas is in a good space and taking leaps to strategize its defense. LDP DEFENSE: Philippine Hiphop Summit is a concert headlined by top acts such as LDP, who have recently won WAVE 89.1’s Best Urban Group; released their debut album entitled The Project that stamped their presence in the scene with refreshing singles like “Simple”, “Three Years In The Making” and more! This event also showcases other premiere hiphop acts Philippine All-stars (2006 & 2008 World Hiphop Dance Championship), Mike Swift (To The Billboard/Konektado), Stick Figgas (Rapublic alumni’s), Nimbus9, Q-York (Capital G Shop), Pikaso (Turf Clothing), Beatbox Philippines, Out of Body Special and more surprise guests!

DEFENSE is this years more significant hiphop event and is all about standing up for the music and seeing the resurgence of energy into the scene. Catch your favorite acts from the shows line up storm the radio airwaves this summer, and hear the buzz all over the metro!

Loonie: The Ones Who Never Made It

Loonie: The Ones Who Never Made It

Loonie was just a name that was floating around in various local hip-hop forums and YouTube before his group Stick Figgas got its first big break after releasing their debut album under 6000 Goonz entitled Critical Condition. His crisp delivery, extensive vocabulary, impeccable cadence and thought-provoking rhymes entangled in cryptic metaphors and turns of phrase set him apart from the usual Filipino rapper. Being FrancisM's closest apprentice didn't hurt either. Having been the Man From Manila's hypeman for 6 years helped him penetrate different markets and trained him to be versatile in both English and Tagalog. His lyrics' brutal honesty gets most of its appeal by delving into subject matters that are regarded by most people as taboo. His blunt take on society, commercialism, ignorance, politics and even religion may be a bit too edgy for today's saturated mainstream radio but it just may be what the local hip-hop scene needs: A voice to represent an entire generation of Filipino kids who are not afraid to speak their minds and question authority.

After a successful album from his group StickFiggas, Loonie has pushed local lyricism to new heights by recording verses in both English and Tagalog, gaining rep as a battle Emcee at numerous local battles, and all taking it in stride. Crowned as 2004's Power 108 Emcee Battle Champion, nominated for Rookie of the Year at the first Philippine Hiphop Awards and Rapper of the Year at consequent awardings and finally taking home his first "Boombox" at the third Awards Show as Co-Producer for Critical Condition (with DiCE of Mobbstarr), this Figga has had major hype leading up to the release of his first solo effort. Now, in 2009, Loonie gears up for his first solo album. Local Hiphop Heads have credited him as the "Lebron James" to Francis M's "Michael Jordan" ---Source: http://www.myspace.com/loonieismarlon
